Lasers + video

Laser and LED screen mapping

Lasers that trace your LED screen content frame by frame, then carry it out into the room. Tuned scanners, colour matched to the screen and locked to one timecode, by a team that has done it for Saudi Aramco, MAADEN and ADGM.

Also called: laser screen mapping, laser to LED sync, laser video sync, laser tracking on video, laser overlay, laser multimedia mapping show, laser and video synchronisation

When the laser and the screen tell one story

Laser and LED screen mapping is when the lasers draw on and around your video, frame by frame. A logo builds on the screen and the laser traces its edges. A line races across the LED wall and carries on into the room as a beam. The picture and the light move as one, so the screen stops being a flat rectangle at the front of the hall and the whole room becomes part of the film.

It is one of the hardest things to do well with lasers, and one of the easiest to get wrong. The guest sees the laser line right next to millions of video pixels, so any wobble, flicker, drift or wrong colour is obvious in a second. That is why it needs different lasers, a different way of working and a team that has done it many times.

Not a normal laser show

A conventional laser show is about beams in the air: fans, tunnels and sheets in haze, sweeping over a crowd. The lasers are rigged for wide, fast movement and a little softness in the beam or a shift in colour goes unnoticed. Screen mapping asks for the opposite. The lasers draw precise graphics on a surface, at a fixed spot, next to a picture that is perfectly sharp. Four things decide whether it looks expensive or amateur:

  • Tuned scanners. The scanners are the tiny mirrors that draw the image. For screen work they must be graphics-grade and tuned to the projector, so lines are straight, corners are sharp and complex shapes hold still without flicker. On the Riyadh Roads Safety Conference we ran our LS-NYX40i lasers with upgraded scanners for exactly this reason.
  • Colour balance. The laser white has to sit next to the screen white, and the brand colours have to match the brand colours in the video. We balance each projector on site against the actual LED content, so the laser looks like part of the picture rather than a sticker on top of it.
  • Tight beams. A fat, soft beam turns a clean outline into a blurry halo. We use lasers with a tight, well-collimated beam so a line on a screen stays a thin, crisp line at full throw distance.
  • Frame-accurate sync. The laser and the video run from one timecode, locked to the media server, so a line arrives on the exact frame the shape appears. Not close. On the frame.

Rent a set of beam lasers from a supplier who has only done club shows and you will usually get the opposite: scanners set up for speed, colours that do not match, and graphics that shimmer next to the screen. We tell clients this before the quote, because fixing it on show day is not possible.

The content has to be made for it

The laser layer is built from the video itself. Alongside the final edit, the content team renders a trace pass: the same animation, but only the points the laser will follow, as clean white dots on black. We turn that pass into laser graphics, so every line, outline and moving shape is keyed to the real frames of the content, not guessed by eye. That only works when the content is designed with the laser in mind, with clear edges to trace, dark areas where the laser can land and moments that hand over from screen to beam.

Random stock loops or AI-generated video rarely work. Shapes melt and redraw themselves from frame to frame, so there is nothing stable for the laser to follow, and the result looks like two shows playing at once. Genuine, purpose-made content is what lets the laser lock on. That is why we prefer to make the content and the laser layer together, on one timeline, from the first storyboard.

At the MAADEN rebranding event in Riyadh we built custom laser overlays and trace layers to extend the content on a large curved LED screen into the room, synchronised frame by frame. No presets, no play-and-hope.

Three ways to work with us

1. Full setup, start to finish

We create the screen content and the laser layer together, supply the lasers and show control, programme everything to one timecode and run the show live with our crew. One team, one timeline, one person accountable. This is the safest route for a launch, a VVIP dinner or an anniversary, and it is how we delivered the ADGM 10th Anniversary: content and sync built over a month, then set up, aligned and delivered on site in 24 hours.

2. Content creation

You already have lasers, or your production company does, but you need the story. Our in-house team and partner studios design LED content made to be traced: the animation, the brand moments and the laser storyboard that goes with it. See our LED screen content service.

3. Laser programming only

Your content is ready and you need it brought to life. We build the trace overlay and the laser programming to your final video, lock it to your media server timecode and operate it on the night. We can run our own lasers, or check your rig first and tell you honestly whether its scanners and colours are up to screen work.

What we need from your content team

When the content is made by another studio, the laser can only be as precise as the files we receive. We send every content team our render guide before they start. In short:

  • A point render of every traced animation. White points of exactly 3×3 pixels on a pure black background, with no blur, glow, anti-aliasing or transparency, and no outline render. Delivered as a PNG sequence, assembled into a .mov.
  • A grid reference image. One PNG at exactly the resolution of the screen and the content: a grid of 8 equal cells across and 4 down, white 3-pixel lines on black, with a full 3-pixel border on all four sides. A border exported at half thickness is the most common mistake, and it throws the alignment off.
  • The final video at the same resolution, with timecode, so the laser and the screen play from the same clock.

Strict pixel rules are what stop distortion, blur and scaling errors between the picture and the light. If your team has not done this before, we walk them through it, and we share reference samples from earlier shows.

How a project runs

  1. Screen and venue. We take the LED layout, pixel map, size, curve and the venue drawings, and decide where each laser goes for a clean, square view of the screen.
  2. Storyboard. We mark the laser moments in the story: where the laser traces, where it frames the screen, where it breaks out into the room.
  3. Content and trace pass. The video and the point render are made at the screen's exact resolution, and the laser layer is built from them on one timeline.
  4. Alignment on site. We play the grid reference on the LED screen and lock each laser to it, edges and every cell line, with geometric correction. Then each projector is colour-balanced against the live content.
  5. Timecode lock. Laser, media server and, if needed, lighting and effects run from one master clock. We have used Timecore clocks with Resolume Arena media servers, and Pangolin Beyond with Rosendahl MIF4 timecode.
  6. Show run. Our programmers run the show live from show control, ready for any change in the running order.

Shows we have mapped

A Saudi Aramco VVIP dinner in Dammam, where we traced the screen's edges and grid in laser and every line moved with the animation. The MAADEN rebranding in Riyadh on a curved LED screen. The ADGM 10th Anniversary in Abu Dhabi, where our LED content and laser sync were built as one show. The Riyadh Roads Safety Conference opening, the World Energy Congress opening at ADNEC, broadcast live, the Genesis X reveal at Dubai Opera, where laser outlines were aligned with the video, and the Al Qadsiah Festival, where 26 lasers on the LED towers hit cues in the screen content for more than 50,000 fans.

Safety

Graphics aimed at a screen end on the screen, but every show still gets a safety plan: projector positions, power set for the surface and the room, scan-safe zones, and audience exposure kept within limits. We handle the approvals the venue needs.

Send us your screen size and a draft of the video. We'll tell you what the lasers can add, and which way of working fits.

Questions

Good to know.

What is laser and LED screen mapping?

Lasers programmed to draw on and around the content on an LED screen, frame by frame. Outlines trace the shapes in the video, lines run off the screen into the room as beams, and both run from one timecode so the picture and the light move together.

Can you use our existing video?

Often, yes. We review the final edit first. Content with clear shapes, clean edges and dark areas traces well. We also need a point render of the traced animations and a grid reference image at the screen's exact resolution, which your content team can make from our render guide. Content where shapes morph from frame to frame, such as many stock or AI-generated clips, is very hard to follow, and we will tell you before we start.

Why can't any laser rental do this?

Beam-show lasers are set up for wide, fast movement in haze. Screen mapping needs graphics-grade scanners tuned to the projector, colours balanced against the screen, tight beams for thin lines and frame-accurate timecode. Without those the laser shimmers and drifts next to the video.

Do you make the content as well?

Yes. Our in-house team and partner studios make LED content designed to be traced, and we build the laser layer on the same timeline. You can also order content only, or laser programming only to your own video.

What files does our content studio need to deliver?

The final video, a point render of every traced animation (white 3×3 pixel points on black, no blur, as a PNG sequence assembled into a .mov) and one grid reference PNG of 8×4 equal cells with 3-pixel lines and border, at exactly the screen resolution. We send the full guide at the start.

How much time does it take?

It depends on the length and complexity of the show. Content and laser programming are built before the event, and all alignment to the screen is done on site. For ADGM the show was built over a month and set up on site in 24 hours.

Is it safe to project lasers onto LED screens and near guests?

Every show gets a safety plan: projector positions, power set for the surface and the room, scan-safe zones and audience exposure kept within limits. We handle the approvals the venue needs.

Where do you work?

Across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC, and beyond. We have mapped screens in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Dammam and Khobar.
