What is Art-Net?

Art-Net is a free protocol that carries DMX lighting data over standard Ethernet networks. One network cable can carry hundreds of DMX universes, far more than traditional DMX cabling, which makes it the backbone of large lighting, laser and pixel-mapped LED rigs.

How it works

Art-Net packs DMX data into standard network packets, so it can travel over Ethernet cables, switches and fibre instead of DMX cable. A console, media server or laser controller sends Art-Net onto the network, and nodes near the fixtures turn it back into DMX, or fixtures read it directly.

Because a network can carry so much data, one cable can hold hundreds of universes. That is why Art-Net is used for large LED and pixel-mapped installs, where every pixel needs its own channels.

Good to know

  • Plan the network like any IT network: proper switches, cable runs and fixed IP addresses.
  • sACN does the same job and is common on lighting consoles. Many systems speak both.
  • Keep show control on its own network, separate from guest Wi-Fi and office traffic.
  • Most modern lasers, media servers and LED controllers accept Art-Net.
